Researchers aims to dispel misinformation in the fashion industry

Four researchers specialising in fashion and sustainability have come together to form a new group that aims to highlight the crucial role that knowledge production and the communication of knowledge play in making the fashion industry more sustainable.

The Union of Concerned Researchers in Fashion (UCRF) includes researchers from institutions in the US, the UK and Sweden. The founding members are:

Professor Kate Fletcher, Centre for Sustainable Fashion, University of the Arts, UK;
Professor Lynda Grose, California College of the Arts, US;
Assistant Professor Timo Rissanen, Parsons School of Design, The New School, US;
Professor Mathilda Tham, Linnaeus University, Sweden.

In a statement, the researchers said: “We have set up the Union of Concerned Researchers in Fashion because change is urgent, and because myths, impenetrable statistics and greenwashing blocks real change. It’s high time fashion follows the limits of planetary resources rather than the growth logic driving industry. This requires change beyond tweaking products. We need entirely new systems and paradigms.”

Among the activities UCRF will carry out is the calling out of misinformed research or research that is being misused by the fashion industry in an attempt to avoid scrutiny of current practices. It will also draw attention to the accurate research into fashion and sustainability that has already been carried out.

In addition, the organisation aims to encourage a strong global network of researchers, fashion practitioners and laypersons who are committed to driving change in the fashion industry. It has said 50 researchers joined the Union within a week of its establishment in February.
