Progress from BASF on colour for recycled plastic

BASF Color Solutions has announced developments in the production of colour, additive and combination masterbatches for recycled plastic.

Driven by the desire for closed material cycles and the economical use of resources, the company said, the recolouring of regrind for plastic recycled materials is gaining further importance.

There is often what BASF has called “strongly fluctuating colour shades” in regenerated material, as well as aging in used plastic. As a result, up until each batch of recycled material required adjustment to achieve the target shade and the desired material properties.

To accelerate this process, BASF Color Solutions has developed special masterbatches to bring the regrind with variations in colour shades to a target shade only by adjusting the dosage. Thus, a once-developed masterbatch can be used for different batches of regrind.

It has also developed a solution based on a modular system. Customers can make recolouring batches for their own recycled material using a colour formulation of their choice.
