Japanese company aims to turn silk into sensors
Smart textiles developer AI Silk was one of a number of Japanese start-ups that took part in the SXSW 2019 exhibition in Austin, Texas, in mid-March.

AI Silk uses a new dyeing technique to endow natural silk fibres with conductivity.

Using this technique, it says it has succeeded in producing electrodes “that reduce some of the risks and challenges of conventional medical electrodes”, such as discomfort, skin irritation and measurement failure caused by sweat.

Garments made using its fibres will work well in applications that seek to measure vital data, AI Silk has said, because it provides electrodes that people can wear for long periods of time.
