UN sets its sights on the fashion industry

The United Nations used its recent Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya (March 11-15) to launch the Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, a new initiative that it said aims to halt “environmentally and socially destructive” practices in the fashion industry. Instead, it hopes to make this industry a driver for improving the world’s ecosystems.

Part of the Alliance’s work will be to improve collaboration among UN agencies to analyse their efforts to make fashion more sustainable, identify solutions and gaps in their actions, and present these findings to governments to trigger policy changes.

Beyond the environment, the initiative will also focus on the potential social impacts of a more sustainable fashion industry. These include the creation of jobs for rural workers, such as smallholder farmers or those working in forestry.
