Icebug claims to be first ‘climate positive’ outdoor footwear brand

Swedish brand Icebug is claiming to be the first outdoor footwear company to become “climate positive”.

On making the announcement, Icebug said that it has had sustainability and eco-consciousness at the heart of its strategy since it began to make footwear to tackle slippery conditions since 2001. In 2018, it took this further by signing up for a United Nations initiative called Climate Neutral Now.

This commitment comprises three steps: companies embracing it must measure their greenhouse gas emissions, reduce those emissions as much as possible and participate in carbon offsetting to compensate for emissions that they cannot avoid.

This led to Icebug speeding up existing efforts to reduce emissions and it officially became climate positive at the end of February 2019.

“When we made the decision, we plunged into the unknown,” said chief executive, David Ekelund, on making the announcement. “We didn’t know if it would cost 20 cents or 20 euros per shoe, but we felt we had to take action. Our prior actions towards emissions reduction certainly helped speed up the process, but we want other companies to know that becoming climate positive was easier than we thought.”
