China relegates US to fifth-biggest cotton supplier

The not-yet-resolved trade tensions between China and the US are continuing to have an important effect on the cotton import-export relationship between the two.

In season 2017-2018, the US was China’s biggest external supplier of cotton with around 45% of all cotton imports.

In February 2019, according to specialist cotton industry information resource Cotlook, the US was relegated to “a distant fifth place” with a share of only 8% of total cotton imports into China.

Australia and Brazil cemented their importance as suppliers to the Chinese market with a share of around 27% each for the month.
