BASF revenues up, despite decline in materials segment

03/05/2019
Chemicals group BASF has registered first-quarter revenues of €16.2 billion, an increase compared to the same quarter last year of 3%.

However, in its materials segment, which comprises performance materials and monomers, sales fell by 15% to €2.9 billion. BASF said this was mainly because of a fall in isocyanate prices in early 2019. In comparison, its margins received a boost in the first quarter of 2018 because of higher isocyanate prices at that time.

Specifically in performance materials, the margins BASF was able to command in the first quarter of 2019 were higher than a year earlier, but volumes were lower.
