TPU plant to come on stream early at BASF site

BASF has announced plans to build an engineering plastics compounding plant and a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) plant at its proposed integrated chemical production site in Zhanjiang, China. These will be the first production plants to come onstream at the site.

For TPU, the company said on making the announcement that growing customer expectations for “enhanced sustainability performance” is one of the factors that are driving growth.

Lightweight materials for consumer goods are among the products that BASF believes will consume an increased volume of TPU.

In total, BASF has said it will invest $10 billion in the Zhangjiang site, which is in Guangdong province in southern China. When complete, it will be the company’s third-largest site globally, after the sites it runs in Ludwigshafen in Germany and Antwerp in Belgium.
