Shoe groups say tariffs will harm importers and manufacturers

Five organisations, the American Apparel & Footwear Association, the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America, the Outdoor Industry Association, the Sports and Fitness Industry Association and the Rubber and Plastic Footwear Manufacturers Association, sent a joint letter to US president, Donald Trump, on May 30 to express their concern about trade tensions between the US and China.

In the letter, the organisations said footwear manufacturing and footwear import businesses in the US will suffer harm as a result of the extended list of products imported from China on the US will impose following an announcement on May 13.

They explained that these measures will not help companies making shoes in the US because many of the materials and components they use are not available in the US.

For importers, they said the task of shifting to suppliers outside China is slow and complex and that, in the meantime, increased tariffs will lead to higher prices for US consumers and the loss of US jobs in the footwear retail business.

The letter concluded with an appeal for the president to reconsider, to make sure the current trade tensions do not bring “catastrophic consequences” for the footwear industry and for everyday consumers.
