Forum says cycling should benefit from climate change concerns

The World Cycling Forum took place in Rotterdam on June 4 and 5. It addressed questions such as the possible impact on the cycling sector of developments such as bike-sharing programmes and the rise of electric scooters in major cities.

Keynote speakers at the event were united in the belief that traditional cycling stands to benefit from a reaction against power-consuming electronic bikes and scooters as concerns about climate change intensify.

Ways of making the bike sector, its products and its production processes more sustainable featured prominently at the forum, which was taking place for the second time, co-organised by the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI).

Professor Steve Evans from the University of Cambridge, a regular participant at WFSGI events, said in Rotterdam: “Sustainability will bring greater disruption than technology.” He urged bike manufacturers to talk to their production engineers about how to treat waste and to identify materials they can re-use. He said they should find ways to improve their use of energy, water and materials.
