Cotton sowing down 12% in India as monsoon arrives late

Monsoon rains have begun to arrive in many parts of India, later than usual. Farmers are now accelerating cotton sowing, having delayed this activity owing to a lack of rain.

Reuters has said cotton planting was 12% behind usual levels across India going into the last week in June and that rain levels are 38% down on normal levels. However, the monsoon, responsible for delivering 70% of India’s annual rainfall, had covered around half of India’s territory by that point.

It said cotton sowing had been delayed by about two weeks in many parts of the country.
