Record revenues for Descente but no Tokyo 2020 benefit yet
10/07/2019
In its results for the year ending March 2019, Descente reported revenues of more than $1.3 billion, a record high and an increase of 0.9% year on year. However, profits on this figure were down by 12.8% on the previous year, reaching $77.8 million. The company said profits were down because it had not achieved predicted sales levels in South Korea and Japan.
On the subject of the Japanese market, it said: “Domestically we see a heightening of expectations across society as a whole as we move closer to 2020. To date, however, there has been no evidence of any increase in customer sales of sporting goods and real demand has not grown to meet expectations.”
In contrast, sales in China increased by 146% year on year, reaching more than $190 million.
As well as the Descente brand, the company owns or operates under licence a number of other prominent brands, including outdoor footwear brand Inov8 and, for some territories, Le Coq Sportif, Arena, Umbro, Skins, Marmot and Cutter & Buck.
