Jordan Brand signs the NBA’s number one draft pick

The Nike-owned Jordan Brand has announced it has added highly-rated college basketball player Zion Williamson to its athlete roster.

Mr Williamson was selected first overall in the 2019 NBA Draft,  an annual event which sees college players selected by the league’s professional teams. US media reports suggest his deal with the brand is the most lucrative deal ever for a rookie player.

“We’re excited to welcome Zion to the Jordan Brand,” says Craig Williams, Jordan Brand president. "It’s incredible to watch him play the game with unbridled passion and joy and we look forward to building our relationship with him for many years to come.”

It looked as if Nike’s chances of snapping up the young star might have been scuppered in February when Mr Williamson was involved in an embarrassing shoe mishap during a high-profile college game. It came about after a Nike shoe he was wearing burst just 33 seconds into the match, causing him to leave the court injured.
