Climbing summit organisers take hope from Olympic inclusion
02/08/2019
In attendance were 290 indoor climbing enthusiasts and senior representatives of companies that supply footwear, clothing and equipment for the sport and for the wider fitness industry, with 29 countries represented.
The pinnacle of the event was a discussion on the future of climbing, which triggered a debate on the possibility that a growth in popularity could lead to a loss of climbing’s character.
WICS will take place for the third time in Sofia from September 16-20, 2020, with the organisers saying the timing of this will be perfect for gauging the possible effects of climbing’s exposure at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which will end six weeks earlier. Climbing will be included for the first time among the 33 sports in which athletes will compete at the games.
