El Corte Inglés commits to responsible cotton

Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), the Geneva-based body that campaigns for increased production and consumption of “more sustainable cotton”, has announced Spanish department store group El Corte Inglés as the latest company to join its programme.

El Corte Inglés said its cotton strategy has three pillars. One is to source new cotton from the BCI programme or, in the case of organic cotton, under the auspices of GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard).

In addition, it said it would seek to use recycled cotton, taking waste material from finished garment production.

“These initiatives are part of our ties to wider society, ” El Corte Inglés said, “and to the spirit of solidarity with the concerns of citizens and environmental responsibility.”
