Thermal body mapping from ASICS helps athletes in Doha

Developed in the lab at the ASICS Institute of Sport Science in Kobe, Japan, the new apparel used knowledge of thermal body mapping to apply water-repellent material in the essential part of running suits to provide a lighter and less sticky feel.
Senior general manager at the Institute of Sport Science, Kenichi Harano, said ASICS sport scientists spent time reengineering the brand’s track-and-field apparel offering to meet the demands of extreme weather conditions such as those athletes endured in Doha. Organisers set the start time for many road events around midnight local time to avoid the hottest conditions, but even so, the women’s marathon on September 27 still began at a temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and humidity over 70%.
Athletes from six federations, sponsored by ASICS, wore the new apparel at the championships. They were Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Ukraine and Bulgaria. They won a combined total of four gold, three silver and three bronze medals at the event.
