Sports brand Mizuno has worked with BASF’s performance materials division to incorporate Elastopan polyurethane into the midsole of its TC-01 and TC-02 shoes.

According to the Japanese brand, Elastopan has helped it build a system it calls ‘centre of balance’ (COB) into  the shoes. COB consists of using bumps moulded into the surface of the midsole to transmit information to the soles of the wearer’s feet.

Mizuno argues that this will improve balance and enhance athletic performance.

“Balance is a key requirement for a wide variety of sports,” said Natsuki Sato of Mizuno’s global  footwear product division at the time of the announcement. “By improving balance, we have made a positive impact on athletic performance and shaped the future of footwear.”
