Market researcher shares 2020 running shoe trends at ISPO

In the global sports market, the US leads with one-third of all purchases; Germany ranks fourth, making it Europe’s largest sports market. These numbers are among the findings shared by Dietmar Brandl at ISPO Munich’s recent Runner's World Running Symposium.
Mr Brandl, a market researcher with NPD Group, was presenting the latest trends of the running market for 2020. He said the global running market increased by four percent between 2014 and 2017 but has since decreased slightly.
Runners in the German market, according to Mr Brandl, are becoming more open-minded about shoe brands. In 2004 Asics was the market leader with its name on the top three shoes (Adidas and Nike were also popular). Last year, the best-selling running shoe was from Swiss brand On, followed by footwear from Salomon, adidas and Nike.
Mr Brandl also pointed out that more than 40 percent of running shoes and clothing are now bought online, which puts pressure on traders in smaller towns and rural areas in particular.
