Running shoe designed to match natural shape of foot

German shoe brand Joe Nimble has partnered with Soles by Michelin to launch a shoe designed to more accurately match the natural shape of a foot.

Called the nimbleToes Addict, the shoe is designed with Joe Nimble's “toefreedom” philosophy and is based on the biomechanical concept from Lee Saxby (a biomechanist, running coach and creator of the “Functional FootMap”).

"The natural shape of the foot is asymmetrical, which is in contrast to modern running shoes, which historically always have a symmetrical shape,"  said Sebastian Bär, head of Joe Nimble and inventor of the Functional Footwear design concept. This can mean toes are not able to anchor and stabilise the foot, which causes pain and inefficient running techniques.

The new shoe is said to be wide at the front, has a flat toe box that supports and stabilises the forefoot, and supports the natural function of the big toe. The Michelin engineered outsole is said to offer stability, durability and traction when running long road distances.

The shoes are currently only available via Indiegogo, a decision the brand said was deliberate. "Even during the development of the shoes, we relied heavily on the input and feedback from the users,” said Mr Bär. "It makes sense to give these initiators first access to what they helped develop."
