Cotton report captures state of sustainability in industry

07/02/2020
The third global Cotton Ranking Report is expected next week, ranking 77 cotton-using companies on their publicly declared policies and commitments, how much of the cotton they buy is from sustainable sources, and on how transparent they are with their supply chains.

Published by Pesticide Action Network UK, Solidaridad and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), the report is said to demonstrate that global companies are moving away from conventional cotton as they value better environmental and social conditions in sustainable cotton production.

An important threshold has been reached for global companies who have publicly commited to using more sustainable cotton, according to a preview of the report’s findings. Major brands, such Nike, H&M and adidas, have committed to sourcing 100% sustainable cotton this year.

The preview also references failings by UK brands who fall at the bottom of the rankings; there is an expectation that CEOs of such companies will be called upon to make commitments to more sustainable cotton usage.

The 2020 report will be launched Feburary 13 at sustainablecottonranking.org, where the 2017 edition is currently still available.
