Coronavirus causes closures for major sports brands

Adidas has said it is temporarily shutting a “considerable” number of its stores in China due to the coronavirus outbreak, according to Reuters.

The virus was hurting the brand’s business, said adidas, which has about 12,000 outlets in China, including franchise stores. The company did not yet know the extent of the impact.

Reuters also reported that Nike has closed some stores in China, and German sports brand Puma has said its factories there will remain closed until February 10.

A Puma spokesman said the company has so far not been informed of any production or shipment delays. However, a number of stores remain closed due to local regulations, he said, and it was still too early to comment on the effect of the closures.

Puma cancelled or postponed all the brand’s events in China in February and its Shanghai office remains closed until February 9.
