New Zealand jerseys use recycled plastics line to honour hometowns

Away jerseys for the five New Zealand Investec Super Rugby sides have been constructed with adidas’ recycled plastic waste line and designed to evoke each team’s local environment.

Made in time for the 2020 season, the jerseys are part of the brand’s Primeblue range of products made with recycled plastic waste intercepted from beaches and coastal communities before it reaches the oceans.

The Blues jersey features a water-effect graphic print of the Auckland Harbour bridge; the Chiefs design depicts water in the thread print running across the jersey; the Crusaders jersey is based on the Braided Rivers; the Highlanders jersey reflects the ocean on the southern Fiordlands; and the Hurricanes jersey has a hand-drawn graphic referencing the abundant wind resources in the area.

“With these jerseys, sustainability and nature act as the muse for our design and we’ve used the natural landscapes of the teams to inspire us at every touchpoint,” said Matthew Fielding, category director. “Our ambition is for rugby fans to feel pride in their hometowns and inspired to join the fight against plastic waste.”
