Lee launches sustainability platform and waterless dyeing process

The debut of Lee’s new denim collection that uses a waterless dyeing process comes alongside the brand’s launch of its first global sustainability platform.

With the Indigood collection, Lee is replacing the traditional water vats and chemical baths of conventional indigo dyeing with a foam dye applicator. This, the company says, reduces the amount of water required by 100 percent, the energy required by 60 percent and the chemicals required by 89 percent.

Select markets this spring will also carry Back to Nature, a jean said to be compostable.

The new platform, called For A World That Works, will focus on three areas: people, planet and “everything we do”. Among the specific goals, Lee aims to transform communities where the brand operates, prioritising worker well-being to ensure the health and safety of workers that contribute to products globally.

The brand will also increase its focus on cleaner energy and conserving water, as well as using technology-enabled eco-conscious design and manufacturing.

“The Lee brand understands its responsibility to help lead our industry toward a better future,” said Chris Waldeck, EVP and global brand president. “Our new sustainability platform is the roadmap that will guide our actions and help drive meaningful progress toward more positive environmental and social impacts.”
