Nike website to highlight products' sustainable features

27/04/2020
Nike is launching a new program on its website that makes it easier for consumers to learn about products’ sustainable features. When a visitor selects the “Shop Sustainable Materials” tab in the navigation, a badge will lead to information about how the selected item was made.

The pilot is launching with apparel made from at least 50 percent sustainable materials by fabric weight (excluding trims) and will include a description of the benefits of these materials compared to conventional materials.

In particular, the company will be highlighting three key areas:

“Sustainable blend” combines recycled polyester and organic cotton for a performance material said to reduce carbon emissions, water and chemical inputs compared to blends made from virgin polyester and conventionally-grown cotton.

Recycled polyester is made from recycled plastic bottles that are cleaned, shredded into flakes and converted into pellets, which are then spun into new yarn.

Organic cotton is made without synthetic chemicals and requires less water than conventional cotton to produce.

The badge used to denote sustainability information is a sunburst originally designed by Nike's first employee Jeff Johnson in 1974. Since then, with Mr Johnson’s permission, the company has used the icon for its sustainability initiatives.
