California company making gowns with polyurethane-coated polyester

California-based Global Protective Gear said it has created an isolation gown using an alternative to the more conventional non-woven fabric that is currently in short supply.

The AAMI Level 1 and Level 2 isolation gowns are made by taking a lightweight 100% polyester and applying a polyurethane coating which results in a waterproof version.

"We were not going to let a non woven shortage get in the way of providing a workable isolation gown in this time of extreme need," said CEO Gregory Lilien.

While some users will be required to dispose after each use, according to the company, in some lower-risk cases the gowns can be washed and reused multiple times. Global Protective Gear said it is supplying 1 million isolation gowns per week to hospitals and medical facilities around the globe for use in low-risk situations.

A new facility is currently being built for the production of AAMI Level 3 and 4 gowns for June 2020.
