Everlane commits to all organic cotton by 2023

American clothing brand Everlane, which entered the performance apparel market earlier this year with a technical legging, will be moving all of its cotton to certified organic by 2023.

This is particularly significant for a company whose signature piece is a plain t-shirt; the brand launched with what it calls a “re-invented t-shirt” in 2011 and has sold four million since.

Announcing the decision on social media, Everlane said that the chemicals used in conventional cotton production are harmful to the planet and dangerous to those who grow it. “So,” it wrote, “two years ago, we set out to source clean cotton.”

The organic cotton is grown and milled in the Madhya Pradesh region of India, which Everlane says has transitioned to organic, removing pesticides from their processes. “Their water is clean, their workers are paid more, and the entire process is certified.”

Finished products are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard.
