AITEX creates sustainability and circular economy technical unit

12/03/2020
Research association AITEX has created a sustainability and circular economy technical unit in response to what it sees as growing challenges for the textile sector. The new unit will work along three areas: research and development, laboratories and training.

“The environmental impact of the textile sector has become one of today’s most worrying issues, as it is the second most polluting industry on the planet. The high consumption of water and chemical products, its carbon footprint, dumping and the emission of microplastics are some of the critical aspects of the production process,” the group said in announcing the new unit.

“Coupled with the enormous quantities of waste and the low recycling rate (only 1% is transformed into new garments) means that the development of sustainable strategies and business models are urgently needed.”

AITEX, which stands for the Textile Industry Research Association, is a private research association that performs trials and certification of textile materials and articles for a range of sectors including work wear, sports and leisure and aerospace.
