He explained that the company sees its fibres’ ability to enhance the durability of garments as one of the main ways in which it can fulfil this ambition.
He said that while the ability to recycle garments more completely is what will make the apparel business genuinely circular, the durability of garments is another key element. And he said the growing desire to produce and buy garments that last longer will help Lycra.

Dr Kirkwood quoted a study by McKinsey that found that 67% of apparel executives said the use of innovative, sustainable materials was important in helping their companies meet their sustainability goals. “Technology is a catalyst for us to become more sustainable and help our customers to become more sustainable,” he said. “We’re creating new fibres that will lead to less waste in mills and use less energy and we are developing technology in our own plants that will lead to less waste and lower energy use.”
