Nike trainer to break foot stress rather than records

Nike’s latest trainer isn’t designed for record-breaking, but rather to address stress on the body and feet.

The Air Zoom Type has two Zoom Air pods in the forefoot and a TPU plate running through the midsole for support. Both are surrounded by a plush foam that the company said will “help create a new underfoot experience and sensation”.

The prototype for the shoe was the Air Zoom Alphafly Next%, a shoe marketed for its speed; it’s what Eliud Kipchoge was wearing when he broke the two-hour marathon barrier in Vienna in October.

"We took the original prototype, scanned it and then reverse-engineered it for daily wear," says Lee Gibson, Nike design lead. "For example, the TPU plate provides some of the modulation of the Alphafly carbon plate, but doesn't give as aggressive of a rocking sensation."
