Bio buy-in: how nylon is leading a shift to biosourced fibres
Brands working to move away from petroleum-based products are creating a growing demand for bio-based fibres, according to a feature in the May-June 2020 issue of WSA. Topping the list of desirable options is biosourced nylon.
This comes with the industry roll-out of a new biotech process for caprolactam production and an increase in the capacity of Rilsan, a polyamide drawn from castor bean oil that dates back to the late 1940s. With research by Genomatica heralding a new milestone for nylon, the synthetic fibre is getting positioned to enter the biotech age.
