The chief executive of athletic footwear retail group Foot Locker, Richard Johnson, has said the company saw “a strong customer response” to its offering in the second quarter of its business year, the period ending August 1.

Two weeks before formally releasing its results for the quarter, Foot Locker published a business update on August 10. It said there had been growth of 18% in comparable-store sales for the three-month period.

Mr Johnson said that, as Foot Locker stores reopened in the course of the quarter, consumers responded well. He said pent-up demand and fiscal stimulus programmes had helped.

“These undoubtedly remain challenging times,” he said in the update. “We are nonetheless pleased by the health of our category, our deep connections with our customers, and the strength of our vendor relationships.”
