Asics commemorates 30 years of its tri-density sole

Asics is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its Gel-Lyte shoe — which was considered groundbreaking at its release in 1990 — by collaborating with Tokyo-based boutique Atmos and sneaker designer Sean Wotherspoon.

According to a footwear marketplace Klekt, Asics’ original gel technology was “like nothing seen at the time”, its silicone-based substance creating a semi-fluid with impact pads placed directly into the sole. The Gel-Lyte III improved on the gel technology with a tri-density sole.

The Asics x Atmos x Sean Wotherspoon Gel-Lyte III OG is based on the original Gel-Lyte III silhouette as a canvas, with each shoe designed to honour a famous city.

In the shoes pictured, for example, “the right shoe represents Los Angeles with bright hues and vibrant florals which have become a trademark of Wotherspoon’s designs,” according to Asics. “The left shoe encapsulates the scenery, side streets and urban elements symbolic of downtown Tokyo, visualised by Atmos.”
