BCI pays tribute to farmers on World Cotton Day
Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), the Geneva-based body that campaigns for increased production and consumption of “more sustainable cotton”, issued a statement on October 7 to celebrate World Cotton Day.
It said that nearly everyone across the world uses cotton every day and that it wanted to mark World Cotton Day by celebrating cotton farming communities. It said these communities “work tirelessly” to bring the world “this incredible natural fibre”.
BCI chief executive, Alan McClay, said the organisation’s aim is to improve farmer livelihoods through the adoption of more sustainable practices. “This past year has been challenging,” he said, “but every crisis carries an opportunity. I applaud all the cotton farming communities around the globe that have adapted and persevered, and on World Cotton Day, I would like to thank them for their invaluable contributions to the sector.”
