Workshirt emerges as second Collection of Tomorrow product

Norwegian outdoor clothing brand Bergans has released a second product from its Collection of Tomorrow, an initiative it embarked on in partnership with Finnish bio-yarn producer Spinnova in 2019.
The Collection of Tomorrow’s aim is to develop fully circular products using only renewable resources. A first prototype product, a sustainable backpack, came out at the end of 2019, with the first backpacks selling to select customers in January.

Circularity comes from having what the partners describe as a subscription-based “takeback and reuse concept”, with subscribers being able to return the backpack to Bergans when they finish using it. Bergans will then pass the bag back to Spinnova, who will turn the fabric into fibre again, which Bergans will use to make a new item for the same subscriber.

This idea won sustainability awards from ISPO and from the Scandinavian Outdoor Group at the start of 2020.

Development has continued, and now a second product, a traditional Scandinavian workshirt, is ready for release.

For this new product, a third partner, Dundee-based textile finishing specialist Halley Stevensons, has come on board. The Scottish company used its experience of making waxed cotton and weatherproofed fabrics to develop the first apparel-quality, dyed and finished fabric to be made from Spinnova’s fibres.
The Collection of Tomorrow subscription model will not apply to the shirt.
