Growth across all categories for Puma in Q1

Sports group Puma has reported revenues of more than €1.5 billion for the first quarter of 2021, an increase of 25.8% compared to the same quarter last year.

The group said it had achieved double-digit growth in all regions and in all product categories. Chief executive, Bjørn Gulden, pointed out that this had come about despite ongoing restrictions on shopping activity in many countries owing to the covid-19 pandemic.

He said other factors that might have dampened growth for Puma were the supply chain issues deriving from container shortages and port congestion and “a tense political situation” in some key regions.

“Our objective continues to be manoeuvring through this difficult time as well as possible in the short term without hindering mid-term momentum,” Mr Gulden said. “The covid-19 pandemic will probably continue to impact our industry throughout 2021, but we feel very confident for the mid-term future of Puma and our industry.”

Footwear was the group’s biggest category, bringing in revenues of €773.8 million in the quarter, an increase of 27% year on year. This was followed by apparel, with sales of €532 million and growth of 27.2%, and accessories, with revenues of €243 million, up by 19.4% year on year.
