100 years of Hanwag
Bavarian outdoor footwear company Hanwag has said it will celebrate its centenary by making 400,000 pairs of boots and shoes.
Founder, Hans Wagner, set up his own business in the village of Vierkirchen, north of Munich, in 1921, specialising in handmade, double-stitched mountain boots and work shoes.
By the end of the 1930s, the founder’s nephew, Sepp Wagner, was involved in the business and orders of leather boots for the increasingly sport of skiing were growing. In the early 1960s, Sepp Wagner took over the running of the company.
Swedish group Fenix Outdoor acquired Hanwag in 2004. Some production continues in Vierkirchen, but Hanwag shoes and boots are also made in Croatia and Hungary now.
