Ocean action demands ahead of G7 Summit
Cornwall-based cold-water surf brand Finisterre has chosen the build-up to the forty-seventh G7 Summit to issue seven demands for protecting the oceans of the world.
Leaders of the G7 states will hold their 2021 summit on Finisterre’s home turf, at Carbis Bay, just 30 kilometres along the Cornish coast from the brand’s headquarters. In the build-up to the event, Finisterre issued a statement saying: “We cannot solve the climate crisis if we ignore the ocean.”
It went on to outline seven demands, asking seven of the biggest economies in the world to ban destructive extraction of ocean resources and to unite to eliminate ocean pollution. Next, they demanded action to protect and restore the oceans of the world for the sake of people, biodiversity and the climate, and for co-ordinated action on “ocean carbon”.
Finisterre’s list of demands then went on to include support for ocean science, better ocean governance and finance and, finally, for ocean studies to feature more prominently in mainstream education.
