PET recycling start-up secures €3m grant
Biotech start-up Carbios has secured a grant of €3 million to help it continue its quest to develop a commercial-level enzymatic recycling process for all forms of PET, including polyester textiles.
The funding has come from the LIFE Programme, the European Union’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action.
Carbios has said that, in contrast to the limitations of thermomechanical recycling processes, its patented technology can create value for plastic and textile waste by providing 100% recycling of all types of PET waste without loss of quality.
It began operating a demonstration plant for the technology in Clermont-Ferrand in central France in September. The €3 million grant will help it scale up and commercialise the technology, the company said.
There will be an initial payment of 40% of the grant, followed by further instalments over the next few years.
The most recent issue of WSA magazine includes a feature-length article about developments at Carbios.
