Fruit-based textiles take a new turn
A company in Valencia has said it has received positive feedback from technical textile institute Aitex about a new material called PersiSkin.
The idea is a development that the company, Laserfood, launched in 2017. Laserfood has developed technology to apply brand information and other data onto individual pieces of fruit and vegetables using laser technology.
Its work with the region’s many producers of fruit and vegetable brought to its attention a series of problems with one specific fruit, the persimmon. Valencia produces 400 million kilos of persimmons per year, but many rot on the ground owing to disease, weather-damage and lack of demand.
A Laserfood team began experimenting with the skin of the fruit and has used it to develop PersiSkin. Following analysis and testing by Aitex, the company says the material could be used in footwear and other products.
It is now attempting to raise investment to launch production of the material later this year.
