Merino makes ‘uniquely elegant’ board shorts possible for Vilebrequin

Woolgrowers’ organisation The Woolmark Company has announced a collaboration with swimwear brand Vilebrequin.

The brand, founded in St Tropez just over 50 years ago, is now part of the G-III Apparel Group. It has worked with The Woolmark Company to produce its first merino wool boardshorts as part of its spring-summer 2022 collection.

There are three styles in the capsule collection: Carreaux, Micro Carreaux and Super 120s. The wool content in these products is, respectively, 100%, 91% (with 9% polyamide) and 98.5% (with 1.5% elastane). The fabrics are from a collection called Active from high-end Italian mill REDA.

Vilebrequin has said inspiration for the shorts came from traditional suiting methods, with this connection apparent not only in the fabrics, but also in the pattern-cutting and pocket placement. In total, 32 steps were involved in the construction of each pair and the shorts are available in navy, light grey and classic gingham.

“Merino wool is a real source of eco-innovation,” Vilebrequin chief executive, Roland Herlory, has said of the tie-up with The Merino Company. “We feel confident our clients will appreciate the remarkable quality and the naturally chic way it hangs on the body. Partnering with The Woolmark Company has introduced us to cutting-edge techniques that reduce our impact on the planet while delivering a uniquely elegant product.”
