Sports footwear and retail group JD Sports has named Andrew Higginson as its new executive chairman. He replaces Peter Cowgill, who left the role at the end of May.

Mr Higginson is a seasoned senior retail executive and was until recently chair of the board of one of the UK’s largest supermarket groups, William Morrison Supermarkets.

He commented: “Having closely followed JD’s success over the years, I see it as an exceptional business, with a strong strategic position.”

He said he would work closely with the board and the senior management, including a new chief executive, a role JD Sports is seeking to fill at the moment.
