Floods cause loss of life and cotton crop damage in Pakistan

31/08/2022

Weeks of torrential rain and flooding in Pakistan have already caused more than 1,100 fatalities.

At the end of August, the government in Islamabad said that, in addition, it estimated at least $10 billion worth of damage to major crops, including the cotton crop in Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab.

Local media estimated that 745,000 bales, around 7% of the country’s cotton crop, will be ruined.

Textile industry leaders have said the price of the cotton that survives is likely to be high, with some imports of cotton likely to be necessary. They said many textile and ginning mills are running below capacity and some have closed.
