Rebranded waterproof fabric on offer from Toray

24/11/2022

Fibre and textile developer Toray is rebranding its Dermizax brand of waterproof, breathable fabric for sports and outdoor wear.

As a result, the fabric will become available in three varieties: Protect will be highly waterproof; Balanced will offer stretch, waterproofness, and breathability, and Breathe will combine high breathability and waterproofness.

Toray is deploying new materials for the rebranded range. It has explained that, before the rebranding, Dermizax consisted of non-porous waterproof, breathable, laminated polyurethane.

Post-rebranding, the waterproof, breathable laminated fabric will incorporate “various membrane materials”, it said, adding that plant-derived fibres would be part of this.

The Japanese group said, however, that the new versions of the fabric would make it easier for brands to customise the levels of waterproofness, moisture permeability and breathability they want to offer.
It added that the new Protect, Balanced and Breathe options are non-fluorine compatible, easier to recycle and highly durable.

It said it aimed to sell 2.5 million metres of rebranded Dermizax between now and March 2023 (the end of its current fiscal year), and 4 million metres the following year. Toray said it expects brands to include the rebranded fabrics in garments for the autumn-winter 2023-2024 season.
