Looms switched off in India

Media in India have reported that as many as 175,000 looms in Tamil Nadu in the south-east of the country have been “turned off indefinitely”.

Reports said the looms were in 300 different production units in the textile clusters around Tiruppur and Coimbatore.

They said this part of Tamil Nadu is one of India’s leading textile hubs and home to the highest concentration of looms in the country, but that manufacturers there have faced increases in the cost of yarn and of energy, while orders have slowed down.

Workers’ rights groups have said they have become concerned about the impact this could have on employment levels in the region.
