Optimism remains high at Cotton Australia, despite wet weather
The Australian cotton industry has published forecasts of a 2023 crop that will be over 5 million bales.
This prediction, from industry promotional body Cotton Australia, comes on the back of a record crop of 5.6 million bales in 2022. It also comes despite the impacts of cooler-than-expected weather, heavy rain and floods that have damaged cotton farms and infrastructure, preventing or delaying planting.
At the end of 2022, Cotton Australia chief executive, Adam Kay, said many farmers suffered extensive damage to infrastructure and winter crops, but that some positive signs were emerging. “Some will be facing a long recovery,” Mr Kay said, “however many other regions are reporting better-than-expected outcomes and we are predicting a crop of around 5 million bales for 2023.”
