Portuguese fabric company makes move on more sustainable nylon

Specialist sports and activewear fabrics manufacturer Lemar has developed a new collection using Nilit’s Sensil By Nature nylon 6.6 fibres.

Nilit launched Sensil By Nature last year, presenting it as a yarn made from 55% biomass. This allows it to reduce its consumption of fossil fuel-based feedstocks and to achieve a carbon-footprint saving of 900 kilos of CO2-equivalent per tonne compared to standard nylon 6.6, while retaining the performance and appearance attributes of earlier versions of Sensil.

Chief innovation and sustainability officer at Nilit, Sagee Aran, said Sensil By Nature was “the kind of radical product development that the textile industry requires to effectively and quickly reduce its environmental impact and move to a more responsible position in the global marketplace”.

The new collection of fabrics from Lemar are for spring-summer 2024 and were on display earlier this year at Milano Unica and Première Vision Paris. The Portugal-based company has described the products as crisp, light fabrics in fresh and bold colours that are elegant and sophisticated.
It said the fabrics were suitable for swimwear and higher-end casual clothing.

Lemar chief executive, Manuela Araújo, commented that Sensil By Nature would allow the company to create more sustainable versions of its whole range of nylon fabrics while retaining the same product performance, soft hand-feel and longevity.

She said the new yarn was the right choice for the company’s “green attitude”.
