Human rights concerns could bring change tack on apparel from Myanmar

The European Commission is to explore additional ways of bringing about better labour conditions in apparel factories in Myanmar.

In a recent report, Reuters quoted a spokesperson from the European Commission as saying there could be a change in the way the European Union manages trade with Myanmar.

At the moment, the Asian country is one of 47 trading partners able to export apparel to the EU without tariffs or quotas. The spokesperson suggested this could change because of increases in reports of human rights violations since a military coup in Myanmar in February 2021.
