Report highlights improvements for Better Cotton farming in India
Sustainability initiative Better Cotton has published a new report that it says highlights important improvements in cotton production in India.
Its 2023 India Impact Report points to significant field-level progress in reducing pesticide and water use.
The report charts the performance of Indian cotton farmers that are part of the Better Cotton programme from the 2014-2015 season through to the 2021-2022 season. Over this timeframe, Better Cotton said pesticide use reduced by 53% and the number farms using products classed by the United Nations as highly hazardous pesticides fell from 64% of all Better Cotton farms in India to 10%.
Water usage for irrigation was reduced by 29% over the same time span.
