Winter sports LCA data from Salomon to be shared with all brands
Sports group Salomon has announced plans to develop a methodology for calculating the environmental impact of all winter sports equipment, starting with its own products but potentially becoming available for other brands to use too.
Vice-president for winter sports equipment at Salomon, Xavier Le Guen, has said this initiative could be “the foundation of an environmental performance labelling system” for the sector.
In 2019, the company began to carry out lifecycle assessment studies across its own range of ski and snowboard products. It has now said it will make the results of those studies available on an open-source basis to help create “a reference that will push the industry towards more sustainable product design”.
It said its LCA work had already made a tangible impact within Salomon. Its winter sports product development teams have been able to alter product design, by integrating a higher proportion of recycled material, for example, but also using less material overall.
