Bangladesh: garment worker protests turn violent

31/10/2023

Amid growing social unrest in Bangladesh, garment workers have taken part in protests and have blocked roads in the Dhaka district of Ashulia.

Reports from local and international media say there were clashes between garment workers and the police, that the police had used tear gas and water cannon, and that there had been at least 30 injuries.

Other reports said workers had caused damage to at least two factories that produce clothing for international brands.

Garment workers staged a national strike in the last week of October to press for a minimum wage of around $210 per month.

Wider protests across the country have led to at least two fatalities.
